“Trust is the New Currency”

I had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by Steven M.R. covey back in April while attending the Ultimate Business Mastery Summit in Las Vegas, which is a whole other story, let’s just say 5 days 400 pages of notes and…

I was cruising through my notes today and came across Steven’s presentation called The Speed of Trust. He gave a very interesting story about Warren Buffet, in which Buffet did a deal with a hand shake and an atmosphere of trust, something like a multi billion or at least multi million dollar deal that would have normally taken lawyers and suits a year to complete instead was done in a month!

Here are some of the great points which Covey pointed out:

  • Trust is a hard-edged “economic driver”
  • Trust is the new currency of the global economy
  • Trust is a learnable skill

Wait a minute, trust a skill? Interesting, I always thought of trust as a characteristic – I suppose it is like social credit, but social credit is something you earn is it not? Well lets continue:

  • Not trusting people is the greater risk
  • Innovation flourishes in an environment of Trust
  • People turn to a Priest, Pastor or what have you, that they trust in uncertain times
  • The ability to Trust is the critical leadership competency of the new global economy

Unfortunately there is currently a Crisis of Trust in the World in which we live.

  • Only 34% of Americans believe that others can be trusted
  • Less then half of employees trust their leaders
  • We have historically low integrity in our nations schools

Who Trusts You?

We trust those with character and competence.

Your Integrity and Intent plus capabilities and the results.

He says to increase your trust levels:

  • Begin with self-trust – ask “Do I give others a person whom they can trust?”
  • This give you self-credibility
